Suvarnabhumi ('su-wan-na-poom') is Thai for "the golden land," a name given this international airport by HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Suvarnabhumi, is Bangkok's new international airport, and was officially opened in September, 2006 after 40 years of construction.
Suvarnabhumi airport is situated in the Samut Prakan province, about 30 km east of Bangkok. The airport's IATA airport code is BKK, and its ICAO code is NBK.
Suvarnabhumi airport has one single terminal to handle all domestic and international flights. This terminal building is a huge 563,000sq m, and is in fact, the second largest one in the world. This modern airport was built at the cost of US$3 billion.
Serviced by major international carriers and regional airlines, Suvarnabhumi airport has the capacity to handle 76 domestic and international flight operations per hour. It can handle more than 45 million passengers and over 3 million tonnes of cargo a year
Currency Exchange at Suvarnabhumi airport
The airport has several currency exchanges that are available 24 hours a day. Suvarnabhumi airport also has several ATM machines with the Cirrus/Maestro, MasterCard, Visa, Plus and others available. The airport's exchange rates are not much higher than those you will find in the city, so you do not stand to lose much by changing your money here. Whether at the airport or in the city, you will get the best rates from the widely available ATM machines.
Transferring between terminals at Suvarnabhumi airport
A free shuttle bus service provides free transfers between the airport's terminal and the Public Transportation Centre (PTC), a separate building about 10 minutes from the Suvarnabhumi airport terminal. It also connects other important airport facilities.
Transferring to the city from Suvarnabhumi airport
At the Public Transportation Centre, you have a choice of a public bus, taxi or car rental to transfer from the airport to downtown Bangkok or other destination. The public buses ply a number of routes to downtown Bangkok, while the air-conditioned coaches provided by the Airport Express run routes between the hotel and Bangkok's world-class hotels. If you prefer a taxi, you will find these at Arrivals on Level 1.
Car rentals at Suvarnabhumi airport
A number of local and international car rental companies offer their services at Suvarnabhumi airport. You will make your booking at the Car Rental service counter located at Arrivals, and the free shuttle bus will transport you pick up your car rental at the Public Transportation Center
Telephone and Internet Service
Suvarnabhumi airport also offers Internet service. The rates, however, are almost 20 times the rate you will be charged in Bangkok's Internet cafes, so unless it is an emergency, you would do well to wait.
