Bangkok Shopping | Bangkok shopping and things to buy

Any goods you purchase in Bangkok are subject to the VAT - the Value Added Tax. Like most other countries, you can claim a refund of your VAT in Thailand. This article will give you tips on how to claim your VAT.

Do You Qualify to Claim VAT Refunds?

To claim a VAT refund, you must be a foreign visitor, and must not have been in Thailand for 180 days in a given calendar year. You must not be an airline crewmember and must depart Thailand from an international airport by air.

Do your Purchases Qualify for a VAT Refund?

The refund does not apply to prohibited items, gemstones, explosives, firearms and other such items.

You must have purchased your goods from a participating store; these stores will display a sign that reads a "VAT Refund For Tourists." The purchases you make from any one participating store on a given day must be worth more than 2,000 Baht including VAT. The total amount you claim for a refund must exceed 5,000 Baht, also including VAT. The VAT refund will only apply to purchases that are taken out of Thailand within 60 days of purchase.

What You Need to Do to Qualify for a VAT Refund

When you are making a purchase of qualifying goods from a participating store, make sure you have the sale assistant fill out a VAT refund form called a P.P.10, and attach to it the original tax invoices. Each P.P.10 application form must have a minimum value of 2,000 Baht.

At the time, you will need to show the sales assistant your passport to the sales assistant.

Requesting your VAT Refund

Before you check in for departure, have your purchases and P.P.10 VAT Refund application form inspected by a customs officer. You will then present your refund claim to the Revenue officer for a cash refund, put it in the mail to the Thai Revenue Department, or drop it off at the VAT Refund office.

How will your VAT Refund Be Paid?

You have the option of having the refund made by either draft or as a credit to your credit card. If the total refund due is less than 10,000 Baht, you also have the option of having it refunded in cash (Thai Baht).

Are there Any Fees involved in getting your VAT Refund?

A fee of 100 Baht applies. For a cash refund, no further fees are required. For a draft refund, an additional draft issuing fee will be applied, and for a credit card refund, a money transfer fee will apply.
