Bangkok's Chinatown is located on Yaowarat Road in Bangkok. The community dates back to the 1700s and many of the people who live in Bangkok's Chinatown speak Thai instead of Chinese as they have lived in Thailand for many generations. Early Chinatown in Bangkok was known for its opium dens and gambling. The vices of Opium and prostitution are no longer founding in Bangkok's Chinatown though there is still a love of gambling and the the noisey sound of people playing Mah Jong can be heard through out the day.


Chinatown Gold and Jade

Many visitors to Bangkok's Chinatown visit for the fabulous shopping. Gold shops adorn most of Bangkok's Chinatown and here you can get good value on gold or silver jewellery. Jade is also available in many of the jewellery shops in Bangkok's Chinatown, at surprisingly affordable prices. Gold and Jade are extrememly lucky in Chinese Tradition and this is perhaps the largest Gold makret for thousands of miles.

Chinese New Year

History includes temples, shrines and museums that are located throughout Bangkok's Chinatown community. There are also live shows and celebrations that take place in this part of town during various times of the year. The Chinese New Year (CNY) has a wonderful celebration on New Year's Eve when the processions od dancers acrobats and Dragons parade down the now famous Yaowarat Rd.

Chinatown restaurants

You can find some of the best restaurants in Bangkok in Bangkok's Chinatown. If you love authentic Chinese cooking, with a little Thai spice, you will be in heaven in this charming part of Bangkok. This is Chinese food at it's best.

Chinatown souvenirs and shopping

In Bangkok's Chinatown you can find some of the best souvenirs in Bangkok. The Chinese New Year decorations and tinsel the dragon motifs, the imagery of Guilin and Guiyang's mountain areas make for fabulous curios or presents for families.

Chinatown Herbal remedies and aphrodisiacs.

The area is also well known for selling herbal remedies and aphrodisiacs. There are many different shops that sell snake blood, guaranteed to bring on sexual desires. Herbal remedies for skin treatments and minor ailments are also found in the shops in Bangkok's Chinatown. A lot of these shops are traders that export Thai herbal remedies to the rest of the Chinese speaking world and can be large trading empires operating out of small premises.

Chinatown is a good location to be as it is close to Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Bangkok Palaces and the Chao Praya River. This makes the location of the following hotels ideal if you intend to take in these sights; 5 star Millennium Hilton Bangkok, 4 star Peninsula Bangkok. If you prefer a budget hotel try the Khao San hotels like the great value but 4 star Royal Princess Larn Luang.

A Caveat; When visiting Bangkok's Chinatown, keep in mind that the crowds often present an opportunity for pickpockets. Pickpockets often work in pairs and even include children in the game. While one person distracts you, another steals your wallet or money from your purse. If you are planning on visiting Bangkok's Chinatown, keep your money in an inconspicuous place and do not take any more than you will need for a day or evening out.
