Bangkok, the city of Angels, is also the city that never sleeps. The Thai capital is one of the world's most exciting nightlife destinations. Bangkok is unrivalled for the sheer energy, excitement and variety of its nightlife.
Unlike most big cities, Bangkok does not offer a one central entertainment district, rather it has several nightspots all around town. Here are a few of them:
Khao San Road
This is one of Bangkok's most vibrant streets, located in Bangkok's Bang Lamphu District. Renown as a backpacker's haven, Khao San Road is notorious for its rowdy nightlife and cheap accommodations.
Within a brief 1km long stretch, you will find cheap guesthouses, convenience stores, pharmacies, banks and even Internet cafes. Almost every variety of bar, pub or club can also be found along this street, most notably the Gulliver's, The Club, Lava Club, Silk Bar, Shamrock Irish Pub and Gulliver's. Day and night, Khao San Road bustles with fun and excitement.
Sukhumvit Road
Without a doubt, this is Bangkok's most cosmopolitan locale, with a distinctly international, multi-ethnic flavor. It is a favored playground for Bangkok's expatriates and wealthy Thais. Sukhumvit Road is located in the city's bustling Central Business District, and features trendy bars, chic restaurants and luxury hotels. The most widely known of these is the ultra-chic Q bar.
Silom Road
Dubbed "Thailand's Wall Street," Silom is a key commercial hub, complete with glistening skyscrapers. By night, however, it is transformed into a bustling hub of thrilling nightlife, as the small sois that lie between Silom and Surawong roads come alive for the night. This includes the famous Patpong redlight district, the gay bars of Silom soi 2 and Silom soi 4 as well as several go-go bars, pubs, restaurants, hotels and other great shopping venues.
Royal City Avenue (RCA)
Here, you will find an entire block of huge Thai discos, most of which are about the size of an aeroplane hanger. Here you can dance the night away to loud Thai pop music.
Nana Plaza has become one of the most popular nightlife destinations in Bangkok. Its best-known bars include: Hollywood Rock, Voodoo, Rock Hard, the Rainbow bars, the Rainbow bars, Hollywood Strip, G-spot, and Silver Dragon, among others.
In recent times, Bangkok's notorious nightlife has come under some scrutiny as the government has sought to regulate it somewhat, for example requiring all restaurants, clubs and bars close by 1 a.m. government rules and regulations.
Much of Bankok's nightlife is accessible by the MRT underground or the BTS Skytrain.
