The earlier capital of Thailand, Ayutthaya, was destroyed and thereafter, Bangkok became the capital in 1782. Total monarchy rule ended in 1932. Nevertheless, even today constitutional monarchy system exists in Thailand. His Majesty King Bhumibol came into power in 1946 and is presently the longest reigning monarch in the world. Although Thailand tries to be a democratic country, military coups stage protests to dislodge the government frequently. Although Thailand was anti-communist, recent times have witnessed major changes in this stance. Thailand is an important member of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).
