Tourist Information in Bangkok
The Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) has its main offices at Thanon Petchaburi, and some offices abroad, so you can pick up a lot of information before you even travel to Bangkok. There are official TAT tour guides available; however, anyone you encounter at a train station or on the street claiming they are a TAT guide will be a fake, so avoid. Likewise, offices and services displaying a 'i' information sign are unofficial, so take any ‘advice' with a degree of caution.
The best tourist information is available from the Bangkok Tourist Bureau, whose main office is on Thanon Phra Athit, and whose white booths are dotted around at hotels and tourist districts. These are the people to trust for quality information. The BTB also offer their own canal, bike and bus tours, which are good value and well organized.
Your Bangkok hotel reception will also provide a wealth of information, and will almost inevitably also offer reputable tours of key attractions via air-conditioned minibuses. Yes, you'll probably end up at a gem store at the end of your tour, but at least you'll also end up back at your hotel afterwards without doing battle with a tuk-tuk driver intent on taking you somewhere else entirely.
